Full Highlight for hair color for short hair: how to prep and what to expect your first time
By Avon Beauty Salon | August 2, 2026
Serving Avon and nearby Plainfield, Brownsburg, Indianapolis, Danville, Mooresville, and Clermont.
A lot of first-timers walk in nervous, then relax as soon as they realize this isn’t a mystery process. One of our regulars put it simply: Billie Jo gives an “extraordinary scalp massage” at the shampoo bowl, and that kind of care is what you’ll feel throughout the appointment. If you’ve been thinking about a Full Highlight to brighten up short hair or add dimension to longer hair, we’ll keep it straightforward and talk you through each step.
Quick reassurance: Your first Full Highlight usually includes a short consult, 1.5 to 3 hours of lightening (foils or balayage), toner, then styling. If bleach is part of the plan, a little scalp sensitivity can be normal, and we’ll keep checking in with you.
This guide covers the prep that actually matters, how timing works (especially if you’re juggling kids and commutes), and how to keep your beautiful hair color looking fresh through humid Indiana summers.
Your Full Highlight prep checklist (and what we need to know before we mix)
Prep doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to be honest. We’re known for being real about what your hair can do in one visit. A client called it out directly: Ashley “will tell you if she thinks a bleach will cause too much damage.” That’s exactly the conversation that keeps your hair looking good after you leave Rockville Road, not just in our chair.
Bring this with you: 2 to 4 clear reference photos (front and back), plus one photo of what you don’t want. That second part saves time and prevents surprises.
- Tell us your hair history. Box dye, dark color, previous lightening, or a “home hair mistake” matters for timing and for how bright we can safely go.
- Say what “bright” means to you. Some people want bold platinum ribbons, others want softer dimensional brightness. We’ll plan placement to match your cut and your styling habits.
- Come in with dry hair. We’ll shampoo when it’s time, and you’ll get that relaxing shampoo-bowl moment our regulars rave about.
- Wear a dark top and charge your phone. Lightener and toner can splash. And yes, highlights take time.
Inside your 90-minute service, and why first-time visits often run 1.5 to 3 hours
Our Full Highlight is priced starting at $190 and listed at 90 minutes. First-timers often need more time because we’re mapping placement, lifting carefully, toning, and making sure the finish looks blended, not stripy. Hair length and density matter too, even for hair color for short hair, because short cuts can require extra precision around the crown and hairline.
If you’re coming from Avon Town Center or you’re headed back toward Avon High School after practice drop-off, plan a little cushion. A relaxed appointment is a better appointment.
Here’s the step-by-step, in plain language
1) Quick consult. We’ll talk goals and realism. Clients tell us we’re “very knowledgeable, ” and you’ll feel that most in this part. If you’ve had reactions or your hair has a lot of chemical history, we may suggest a patch or strand test so there are no surprises.
2) Sectioning and placement. Full Highlight means highlights throughout the hair for maximum brightness and dimension. We’ll use foils or a balayage approach based on the look you want and how your hair lifts.
3) Processing time. You might feel mild warmth or tingling if lightener is used. That’s common. But you should never feel like you have to tough it out. Let us know, and we’ll check your scalp and adjust.
4) Rinse, shampoo, and the best part. Our shampoo bowl is where a lot of people finally exhale. We hear “I literally almost fell asleep” more than you’d think, and yes, that head and neck massage shows up for a reason.
5) Toner and style. Toner is what takes you from “lifted” to “beautiful hair color.” It helps fight gold tones, keeps things blended, and makes highlights look intentional, especially around the face.
“My hairstylist was wonderful, very friendly and welcoming to a first-time visitor, plus she did a great job with my hair. I will definitely be back!”

Keeping highlights bright in July: toner timing, pool water, and brass control
Right after your Full Highlight, your hair usually feels lighter and a bit drier than normal, especially if we lifted several levels. That’s not you doing anything wrong. It’s just what lightener does. The good news is, the right home routine makes a huge difference. Ashley is known for teaching people ways to keep hair “happy and healthy, ” and we keep that same energy with highlights.
Sulfate-free shampoo matters
We generally recommend a sulfate-free shampoo to help your toner last longer. If your highlights fade fast, this is often the first fix.
Purple or toning shampoo, but not daily
Toning products help keep blondes from going brassy. Most people do best using them 1 to 2 times a week, then adjusting based on how warm their hair pulls.
And pool season in Avon is real. Chlorine and sun in humid Indiana summers can push highlights warm fast. Before you swim, we generally recommend wetting hair with clean water first and using a leave-in conditioner as a buffer. After swimming, rinse as soon as you can and follow with a gentle shampoo. If you notice brassiness creeping in, that’s your sign to schedule a toner touch-up instead of piling on purple shampoo for weeks.
Insider tips for a confident first Full Highlight in Avon (especially on busy schedules)
Here’s what we see all the time at Avon Beauty Salon on the Rockville Road commercial corridor: the people who love their highlights long-term are the ones who plan the next small step. Full Highlight first, then a toner refresh when it needs it. That’s how you keep that radiant, blended finish without feeling like you’re “always at the salon.”
If you’re not totally sure what you want, you’re in good company. We hear that a lot, and we’re used to talking it out. One of our regulars said, “Even when I’m not sure what I want to do, she works her magic and I am always pleased.” That’s the vibe we aim for: calm, clear, and no pressure.
A detail most places won’t say out loud: if your goal is bright blonde but your hair pulls gold easily, we’d rather take an extra step with toner and aftercare planning than over-push lightener in one visit. That’s how you get a blonde you can actually live with.
